Rotary Partners with High School Interact Club
Rotary Club of Cedaredge and Cedaredge High School Interact Club Strengthen Partnership Through Service The Rotary Club of Cedaredge recently welcomed students from the Cedaredge High School Interact Club for an evening of fellowship, introductions, and conversation about opportunities to serve students and families throughout the community. Held at the Lucky Shot Clubhouse, the evening began with a traditional Rotary meeting led by Rotary Club President Mark Condon. Interact students had the opportunity to experience a typical Rotary meeting firsthand, including the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence, invocation, and the Rotary Four-Way Test. Members also discussed preparations for Applefest, a major community event where Rotary volunteers will assist with serving, cleanup, line management, ice-cream scooping, and other activities. During Applefest, the Rotary Club of Cedaredge will share photos and updates on its Facebook page, highlighting the event and the many volunteers who help make it possible.

Cedaredge Rotary Club Gives Dictionaries to Third Graders Cedaredge, Colorado — September 23, 2026 Third-grade students at Cedaredge Elementary School recently received a special gift from the Rotary Club of Cedaredge: their own dictionaries. Eight Rotary members visited the school as part of the club's annual dictionary project, a community tradition that encourages reading, vocabulary development, and a love of learning. "We are always excited to share these dictionaries with the students," said Mark Condon, president of the Rotary Club of Cedaredge. "We hope these dictionaries encourage them to keep learning, discovering new words and enjoying the world of reading." Cedaredge Elementary Principal Holly Rupp thanked Rotary for providing a dictionary to every third-grade student. The annual project reflects the Rotary Club of Cedaredge's commitment to supporting local students, education, and the community. For the third graders, their new dictionaries will be a useful classroom resource throughout the school year—and a reminder that their community supports their education.

Logan Locke Named Cedaredge Rotary Club September Student of the Month Logan Locke, a senior at Cedaredge High School, has been named the Cedaredge Rotary Club’s September Student of the Month in recognition of her academic achievement, leadership, community service, and character. Logan Locke, a senior at Cedaredge High School, has been named the Cedaredge Rotary Club’s September Student of the Month in recognition of her academic achievement, leadership, community service, and character. Locke was honored during Tuesday’s Rotary Club meeting, where President Mark Condon presented her with the Student of the Month award along with a $500 scholarship contribution. The Cedaredge Rotary Student of the Month award recognizes a local student whose accomplishments and involvement have made a positive difference at school and in the community.

Guida Anderson Joins Rotary Club of Cedaredge
The Rotary Club of Cedaredge is pleased to welcome Guida Anderson as its newest member. Anderson joins the club as a transfer member from Delta Rotary, bringing extensive community experience and a strong commitment to serving the local community. Anderson has lived full-time in Cedaredge for the past eight years. She is a licensed real estate broker and is actively involved in the community, including serving as co-chair of the Grand Mesa Short Film Festival and as a member of the Special Events Committee for the local Art Center. Supporting young people is especially important to Anderson. Through Rotary, she hopes to support the club’s Interact program and help provide scholarship opportunities for students pursuing higher education. |

Club Welcomes New Member Chaucey Edwards The club was pleased to welcome Chaucey Edwards as its newest member. Edwards was recognized for her strong commitment to community involvement and was presented with her official Rotary pin and a bronze coin engraved with Rotary's Four-Way Test. Having recently relocated to Cedaredge, Edwards currently serves as the Community Outreach Coordinator for HopeWest Hospice and Palliative Care. HopeWest provides compassionate care and support throughout the region, serving communities across Grand Junction, Delta, and Montrose. The organization is supported by approximately 450 employees and more than 1,200 dedicated volunteers. The club is delighted to welcome Chaucey and looks forward to her contributions, fellowship, and continued service to the community.

A retired architect with more than 40 years of experience, Steve has served as Sergeant-at-Arms and now leads the club as its President, encouraging members to set goals, stay engaged in service, and celebrate accomplishments together. |

Rotary at the Start of the United Nations
During World War II, Rotary informed and educated members about the formation of the United Nations and the importance of planning for peace. Materials such as the booklet “From Here On!” and articles in The Rotarian helped members understand the UN before it was formally established and follow its work after its charter. Many countries were fighting the war when the term “United Nations” was first used officially in the 1942 “Declaration by United Nations.” The 26 nations that signed it pledged to uphold the ideals expressed by the United States and the United Kingdom the previous year of the common principles “on which they based their hopes for a better future for the world.”

History of Women in RotaryWomen are active participants in Rotary, serving their communities in increasing numbers and serving in leadership positions in Rotary. The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary. “My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01. The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings.

Please read a message from our President, Phyllis Hoffman, below. "I feel it is prudent at this time to suspend our lunch meetings for the remainder of March. Due to the fact that most of our members are in the "at risk" category for a poor outcome if contacting the corona virus. We have no control over what traveling public may be stopping for lunch at our meeting place. I would still plan on having our private 5th Tuesday Pot Luck at the Rantas on the 31st unless Don wishes to cancel. I will still take lunch to our Interact club at the school if they have not suspended activities. We can all stay home, stay safe and well. I will make a decision about April when we get there. Rotary Backs the Badge
 Rotary President Phyllis Hoffman presents a check to Cedaredge Police Chief Dan Sanders At the August 6 meeting we were honored to present a check for $1572 to Cedaredge Police Chief Dan Sanders. The proceeds from our Back the Badge event at 4 B's on August 3 will support "boots on the ground" needs of the department. Barb Breitnauer, 4 B's owner also joined us for lunch so we could thank her for donating the restaurant and the beer for the fundraiser. The Cedaredge Rotary Foundation is also establishing a fund for the Cedaredge Police Department to encourage businesses in town to make donations to support our officers. Cedaredge Tire has already committed a portion of their monthly profits to support the police. |

Cedaredge Girls Learn More Than BasketballDan Tietz, Assistant Coach of the Cedaredge 5th - 8th Grade Girls Basketball Recreation League is transforming young girls into young ladies. The travel team similar to AAU programs competes in tournaments around the state. Dan knows that while he focuses on competitive basketball play his players gain more than rules knowledge and game strategy.  |
Local Author and Miner Shares Stories from his BooksFebruary 26 at the Rotary meeting David Rasmussen, local Cedaredge author and miner shared stories from his trilogy series Legend of the Shaman. “Still a gold miner at heart,” Dave has done extensive research on his leading characters and their roots from the Casitilian region of Spain. Dave has written another book The Man Who Moiled for Gold.

New Meeting Location as of February 5, 2019Due to the remodeling and construction at RJ's Steakhouse, Cedaredge Rotary will now be meeting at Creekside Café. Just two miles north on Highway 65 ( 365 N Grand Mesa Drive), Creekside Café is on the right past the traffic light at Main Street in Cedaredge. Parking is available in the front for handicapped and on the side of the restaurant. Creekside's owner Cody Nelson and Chef Jimmy Berardi are looking forward to hosting Rotary for our first meeting there on February 5. We are so grateful to RJ's Steakhouse for all their service to Rotary and our community over the past years. Our program for February 5 features our own Phil Ellsworth, Poet Laureate for Cedaredge and the 2018 Citizen of the Year. Phil's music, poetry and stories are a special treat. His program is titled "In the Memory Wing."

We were proud to have our first Student of the Month for the 2017 - 2018 School year. Jade Gummo was our student. She is a senior at Cedaredge High School and was born and raised right here in Delta County. She is taking CNA courses through the community college and is looking forward to a career in nursing. We all encouraged her and especially Phyllis who told her she would never have to look very hard for a job once she has completed her education in nursing.

STUDENT OF THE MONTHSTUDENT OF THE MONTH Enjoying the Cedaredge High School students once a month at our weekly meeting has not only been fun but enlightening. We were excited to have a student come and join us for lunch along with a teacher and sometimes their parents. The achievements of these young people were totally "over the top". The academic scores, the community involvement, sports activities and involvement in such clubs as FFA, National Honor Society and other opportunities to serve.         |
India celebrates three years without polio Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."The three-year achievement sets the stage for polio-free certification of the entire Southeast Asia region by the World Health Organization. The Indian government also plans to convene a polio summit in February to commemorate this victory in the global effort to eradicate polio.

Saving lives in Ghana What is it like taking a large team to Africa? It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.A highlight for the team was greeting the chief of Sagadugu. The team got excited about buying goats and food for children in the villages where I support eight churches. It was good to see the pastors of most of the eight churches, and I had to explain that we were just passing through on our way to Bolgatanga. |
Helping people with disabilities make their own music
Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school.
After their son Mateusz was born with underdeveloped eyes, Mariusz and Joanna Kania looked for ways to help him be active. When he showed an aptitude for music, they looked for a teacher and were thrilled to find the Paul Harris music school.

Finding Safe Haven For years, Angalia Bianca had slept in abandoned buildings throughout Chicago. She stole. She did drugs. She spent time in and out of jail for forgery, theft, trespassing, and possession of narcotics. But after she landed in prison for the seventh time, something changed -- Bianca knew she wanted a better life. She just didn’t know how to make it happen.After serving her time, Bianca sought help from a local homeless organization, A Safe Haven, and moved to its shelter in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Bianca followed the program closely -- she attended all the required meetings, passed drug tests, and volunteered at every opportunity.

On October 24, World Polio Day, the Rotary Club of Cedaredge joins Rotary International in raising awareness of the global effort to eradicate polio. Although cases have declined by 99.9% since 1988, the disease remains a threat in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Continued vaccination, public awareness, and financial support are essential to achieving a polio-free world.

An estimated 500 million people worldwide became infected. Many cities closed theaters and cinemas, and placed restrictions on public gatherings. Rotary clubs adjusted their activities while also helping the sick.
Rotary and the United Nations have a shared history of working toward peace and addressing humanitarian issues around the world.
Every hero has an origin story. “I was 10 years old when the entire journey started,” explains Binish Desai. It began with a cartoon called Captain Planet, an animated TV series from the 1990s about an environmentalist with superpowers. Desai can still recite the show’s refrain: Captain Planet, he’s our hero / Gonna take pollution down to zero! “That tagline stuck in my mind,” he says. “I wanted to do something to help Captain Planet.”
In early 1919, Rotarian Roger Pinneo of Seattle, Washington, USA, traveled to the Philippines to try to organize a Rotary club in Manila. Leon J. Lambert, a Manila business leader helped Pinneo establish the club. Several months later, on 1 June 1919, the Rotary Club of Manila was chartered and became the first Rotary club in Asia.
